Answered Prayer

A friend of mine from our Prayer Ministry, was telling me about an encounter they had concerning prayer, and I thought that it might be encouraging to you.

He was serving communion two months ago at our church, when a young lady came through the communion line, as she came through the line the Lord told him that she was sick, and that God wanted him to pray for her. He waited until the communion was over, and went directly to the young lady. Come to find out, that it was the young ladies first time visiting the church, and that in fact she had severe migraines that tormented her life. He prayed for her a couple of months ago, and had not heard from her since.

Until yesterday… he was sitting in a pew when in the greeting session of church, a young lady introduced herself as the one who he had prayed for. She said that her migraines were healed from that day forward. That she had mild headaches now but nothing like she had before.

If you needed to be reminded that prayer works… be encouraged, if you find yourself being obedient to God and wondering what will come of the situation, you can bet God will complete what He has set out to do. He does not instruct us for vanity, but for everlasting accomplishments.

Creation and the Virgin Birth

(In the past I have done lots of thinking and wrestling with ideas hoping to really change folks. But in light of this new way of blogging I ‘m just going to spill my heart and let you deal with it.)

My professor tonight said that there are still some people in the backwoods of South Carolina who still believe in the six day creation. I understand where he is coming from I have had those debates with highly intelligent people. I understand that the form of text the creation story was written was poetic in form. But…

I have been meditating on the creation and its indirect relation to the virgin birth for some time now. And something inside me tonight just busted open with frustration at such a bold statement; to in one breath preach with conviction the inerrancy of scripture and then says the six day creation is false. Now hear that I am not mad at my professor I am mad at the many people who don’t see the greater implications including him.

Did you know that some folks doubt the virgin birth? They say that because no one in the epistles even mentions that virgin birth that it did not happen that some drunken monk added it after the life of Christ. Some say that some blond headed German slept with Mary as he was passing through, hence the blond Jesus seen in early art. If Jesus wasn’t virgin born than what in the h*&% are we doing? If God did not have the power to create a world in six days then does He have the power to reign it all in at Apocalypse? If Jesus was not born of a virgin then maybe he didn’t resurrect on the third day? Maybe He just moved to the North Pole. Maybe the world will just continue to exist for another 7 million years where we will evolve into super heroes?

Okay so maybe I’m exaggerating. My point is that we are saved by faith… I believe God created the world in 6-24 four days. I believe that Jesus was born of a virgin, I believe Jesus died and was resurrected, I believe Jesus will judge everyone who ever existed and recreate the earth to reveal His glory. The scripture is my source of truth in life. We can debate about it until we are blue in the face if one part of the Bible is untrue then what part is true?  Faith people faith!! Who cares what carbon dating says, who cares that it doesn’t make sense. I know God is alive because He lives in me I can’t prove it nor would I want to. But I know it and you can filet my body and burn me at the stake I will not recant. See if an evolutionist will do that, then come back and talk to be about truth.

(My belief of the 6 day creation lies in the belief that Adam was made as a man not a baby he was made with age, so to God did create an earth with an appearance of age)

Response to The Doctrine of Humanity by Charles Sherlock

(The following is a reflection of a book I recently read for Theology class. Note the ranting preacher tone that goes beyond sound thinking and into a cuting of my own heart out.)

Sherlock from the onslaught compares the study of humanity by a man to the study of water by a fish (Sherlock, 1996, p. 21). I have been reflecting on the single minded goal of God as a disciple in light of this doctrine and can’t help but to see that a lot of what is presented in this doctrine is a necessity for understanding what ministry is and how it works today. My focus in discipleship has been to seek and find God while overlooking the need to understand and effectively evangelize to men.

The doctrine of humanity is one that is never finished or can ever be. Every year and in every culture the understanding of where we are as humanity is changing. This results in the need to further describe and wrestle with where we are and where we are going as humans. To be able to focus from the creation of man, to the reconciliation of man, to the current state of man is eye opening. Each section provides great insight as to how we function as people and more importantly why we are the way we are. For example, the current growth in technology has emphasized and spread “miracle grow” on the self centered universes that we all have the tendency to live in. Although some may argue that technology, i.e. cell phones, personal computers, and cars, has helped community, Sherlock points out, “The rise of individualism in the West in the past two centuries under girds the priority of the personal, but emphasizes it so greatly that human life has become fragmented. It is paradoxical that the growth of technology has fostered individualism along with global problems…” (Sherlock, 1996, p 100). From our understanding of what the Church is from scripture and the example of the incarnation of God in Christ, the church has always been very human. We lay hands on one another, sing songs together, and speak the words of God over one another. The current trend towards online chat rooms, emails, text messages, and the like give a false since of what community means and in turn what being the body of Christ means. There is no wonder why there is a current rise of the ancient heresy of Gnosticism and the dichotomization of body and spirit. In comparison the 21st century church probably would call a church like that in Acts cultish and weird. But that is where we are today and that is why being aware of the doctrine of humanity can help us understand why we are the way we are, and then be able to humble ourselves before Father God and ask for direction as to how to live in faithful community in spite of the water that surrounds us.

Tendencies toward Gnosticism are not easily discerned while “swimming in the water” but there effects are easily seen. As the early apologist Justin Martyr connected the Greek philosophies with the teaching of Christ superimposing the ministry of Christ on top of philosophies. In the same vein, today the current individualism has led us to the unbiblical place of emphasis upon personal and private salvation that may or may not be evidenced by the fruit of such a declaration. This way of looking at faith has made it easy to add faith to a segmented personal life, never submitting to the God, the Church, and certainly not to another man. It’s amazing that one of the prominent business leaders in the city once had to wait in line at church to shake my hand, in any other setting I’m sure I would be overlooked. This reveals the way humanity as a whole has rejected the whole hearted call to pick up our crosses and follow Christ. Once we were gladly thrown to the beasts for the name of Christ, now folks who claim to be disciples are careful not to mention Jesus on there personal website for fear of offending someone. Lord help as a people to once again live boldly as your body.

“I’m not “not talking” I’m just not talking.”

Been power housing a theology book the last couple nights for hours on end preparing for class this weekend. It’s like I’m floating down a river of heavy thought with my pencil as my ore touching down on the page to keep me directed.

Woke up later than I wanted this morning and as always ask for grace to cover the lack of my full devotional time. It amazes me that on days like this God always gives me more grace than I deserve. I knew it was on when within the first hour of work I had a very powerful conversation with a good friend where tears of pain were shed toward legalistic Christians and then tears of healing and comfort as we prayed. This life sure is amazing.

No work tomorrow, just The Doctrine of Humanity by Charles Sherlock and preparation for a quiz. I can’t wait for Chapel tomorrow night. The services are always fresh yet musically they could use some work. I don’t know if I will ever get use to being around ministers… as I wrote yesterday if must be hard to be around me at work. Maybe it’s hard for anyone to be around me anywhere. If I am anything like some of the people that I encounter I need to get a little introspective about this…   I am not trying to sound judgmental, but man have you ever been around a bunch of pastors under one roof. We don’t know how to act. We can’t figure out what to do, it’s kind of like putting two dogs in the same yard for the first time they have to find out who’s the dominate one. For pastors it is who can serve the other one first trying to get the other to begin to open up while they sit back and listen. I have always gotten hung up when I try to serve others by being quiet, don’t get me wrong being quiet is a good thing, but when you are being prideful and quiet others know it and it makes them uncomfortable. God has taught me that you can be a humble servant by talking. Or, as I heard on Fresh Prince of Bel Air today, “I’m not “not talking” I’m just not talking.” At this point in my ministry I know more of what I don’t want to become more than what I do want.

Well all jokes and confusing remarks aside, the only real escape from being annoying and prideful is being transformed by the grace of God, acknowledging my mistakes and asking for forgiveness and new mercy.

He Makes All Things New

Well I sit in front of the computer today for the first time in long while to Blog. A few months ago my Saturday was my Sabbath and my blog was my weekly baby… today this is not the case. I now have two of my best friends in the world that would rather have my attention on Saturday mornings, and now I am a seminary student.

Today this new look on this site is a reminder that I am in a new season and am preparing for a new way of blogging. Before I felt the need to feed people through this blog, but with the way my schedule is I plan on using this to just vent, share, and express some of my thoughts; so if you have been reading this for a devotion I’m sorry I can’t continue that kind of pace especially while I am being shook so hard by the theology I have been learning.

It has amazed me at the folks who write some of the theology I have been reading it seems that you don’t have to be saved to write it. That is not the norm; most of what I am reading is like a long walk with the Lord. Most recently I have been reading a book entitled The Doctrine of Humanity by Sherlock, kinda fundamental thoughts, but amazingly refreshing putting together the creation, the fall, and the new creation forged by Christ.

Work is interesting in that we have a new store manager who is trying to figure me out. I guess it’s only a matter of time before I reveal my true intentions of living life, to bring glory to Jesus Christ. Being around a Christian like me must be hard in the secular environment I’m kind of like the hair in the biscuit. I humble myself so you won’t intimidate me for long. Money and power don’t impress me or sway me. And at some point you can expect an awkward Jesus conversation challenging your worldview. You can’t fire me because I do my job well. I know it sounds weird but this is how the Kingdom looks for me. Life is in high gear, the economy is going down the tubes, But Jesus is as real as ever.
