One of the most difficult and most rewarding lessons I’m learning as a young Pastor is how to hold the sheep loosely. As I acquire deep maternal instincts that at some points want to save them from the hard world, I also am acquiring the paternal instincts that knows that the cold wind and rain of the world will draw them to Father God.
Loving deeply and yet not swaddling them like babes. It seems that God himself wants to play the major role in the life of the church. If I am too zealous for His prize I may hinder that relationship.
It’s a beautiful and wonderful role when held in the proper light. Held loosely, not taking myself and my teaching too seriously, and pointing flamboyantly to Christ Our Savior.
